Flo: An Underwater Plastic Collector Inspired by Nature

Revolutionizing Water Pollution Cleanup with Innovative Design

Flo is a groundbreaking underwater plastic trash collector that combines innovative design with the power of gamification to engage and educate users about the importance of preserving our marine environment. Created by Team Flo, this unique robotic fish is inspired by the activities of The Inner Harbor Water Wheel System, specifically Mr. Trash Wheel of Baltimore. By harnessing the current of the river, Flo collects plastic trash and offloads it into the containment zone of Mr. Trash Wheel, contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment.

Flo stands out from other water pollution cleanup solutions due to its distinctive design and interactive features. Modeled after the form of a fish, Flo not only serves as an effective plastic collector but also as a futuristic toy that engages users of all ages. When paired with Flograb, a mixed reality game, Flo becomes a tool for educating and raising awareness about pollution. In this game, players compete with each other to collect trash, which is assigned points. This gamification of water pollution not only entertains but also accompanies city clean-up projects on a larger scale.

Equipped with infrared and HD cameras, a sonar sensor, and a WiFi receiver, Flo allows users to locate plastic waste in real-time. Its solar panel powers the device, storing energy for efficient operation. The impellers enable Flo to move in different directions underwater, while the suction pump inside its body efficiently sucks in plastic and smaller particles through a small inlet mouth opening.

The technical specifications of Flo are 470mm x 325mm x 280mm, making it compact and maneuverable in various water environments. Its construction primarily consists of plastic with silicone rubber elements, ensuring durability and resilience.

Flo's interaction with users is facilitated through Flograb, a gripping game that combines physical and digital elements. The mobile app allows users to control and play a series of time-based trash collecting games using Flo. Connected wirelessly, users can locate, collect, and even compete with other players, leading them to dump real plastic trash into containment zones before returning to the owner. This interactive experience not only educates users about the impact of pollution but also empowers them to make a difference.

The development of Flo took place over a span of four weeks, starting in June 2016, during an envisioning workshop at Domus Academy in Milan. The design team, consisting of Sruthi Yathindradas, Bingyi Tian, Jiawen Lian, and Jyothsna Joshi, conducted extensive research on marine pollution, the future of education through games, and the potential of technology to address environmental challenges. Their insights revealed the alarming increase in plastic production and the need for innovative approaches to raise awareness and combat pollution.

While Flo presents several challenges, including ensuring user safety and handling the technological aspects of the device, the team remains committed to refining and improving the design. With further research and development, Flo has the potential to become a powerful tool in the hands of children, empowering them to actively contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable future.

Team Flo holds the copyright for Flo, with Sruthi Yathindradas as the designated owner. This innovative design has been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in 2017. This prestigious award acknowledges well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. Flo's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contribute to a better world by addressing the pressing issue of water pollution.
